Japan Expo Halftime – And New Stuff Upcoming

Posted on March 14, 2013 by Thomas | My Exhibitions | Tags: , , |

Time for a little update about the expo of the Japan artworks.
The reactions so far are really nice. The opening was sold out – and even with added seats there were still people willing to stand to watch the presentation. It’s great to get lot’s of people that care about the topic and art… some lesson I tried to apply from my experience from my first bigger expo, where it was quite full but mostly with friends. Of course now I had fellow artists helping. There is still lots to improve for next time – I’ll write a detailed post-mortem after the expo is closed.

Anyone who wants a tour is welcome to contact me – I live closeby, and happy to hear what people think.

Some other notes:
The Gallery-PR2 is now also selling my artworks. With some group-showings possibly coming up. Some really skilled artists showing there, like Svetlana Tourina and Natalia Dik. A must see if you like representative art (close to CS).
This month is packed with other events:
On Sunday (17th) I’ll be at the Rembrandt Art Market with a little stand, trying to sell paintings. If anyone wants to join in, let me know – it’s said to get busy (and press is coming), so it might be tough to keep an eye on the stand alone.

Aaand the following week, 24th of March: Portraits in the Noorderpark (aka Flevopark) for the Noorderparkkamer.

Sunday the 30th I’ll be at the Rembrandt market yet again. As because per usual I’ll do everything wrong the first time :D

And then Monday I’ll portrait again: …on Het Feestje van Steve on the Steve Bikoplein in Amsterdam Oost. Time for a new challenge: This time I’ll try black and white with oil colors.

Why:
Machiya are the traditional wooden houses in Kyoto. A unique mix of merchant/artisan and living space. The idea to let artists from the Netherlands stay in such a house, is to let them experience the everyday live of the city more direct than when staying in a hotel. Seeing the traditions and way of life of the neighbors directly, allows a direct exchange between the Dutch and Japanese cultures.
At the end of 2012 Thomas Schmall, Annelinde de Jong and Lies Verdenius took part in this residence program. They stayed from mid-October  until the end of November – working on artworks, installations and learning about the local culture and craftsmanship. The specific inspirations during this stay came from the small streets with many of the Machiya, the production and use of Washi (like the Washi-making, a handmade paper that is made since more than a thousand years) and the impressive temple gardens.

Waarom:

Kyoto Machiya Exposition Flyer

Kyoto Machiya Exposition and First Painting

English: So on the upcoming 22nd and 23rd of November, we three Machiya Artists in Residence will have our exposition. Anyone who can – please join if you can. We’ll give talks about our experience on Friday from 14 o’clock until 16 o’clock.

And as I want to keep the postings short, to have more time for painting, here’s the first finish picture. I might add a little light in the Machiya, or it might stay as is. I have time to decide.
I used the wood panel I posted before – works really nice, so you’ll see them here more often, even when I’m back to home base.

Joint Exposition - Nudes - Thomas Schmall - Berkendijke

Next month will be a new exposition I take part in – with “Nudes” as the topic. Good motivation to work on several paintings I long planned to finish.

Some days ago I shipped them all to the Gallery Berkendijke in Beek en Donk (around Eindhoven, South Holland). They will be shown from July 30 until the August 28 (each weekend from 1 to 5 pm).

This is the final version of “Marta” – of which I showed step 1, step 2 and step 3 in earlier posts.

I did invest in several nice frames for the images. I like the look it adds to this one – you can see it below. Also really works well for another recent painting called “Emily”

Window Display in Amsterdam – The Last Weeks

Posted on June 17, 2011 by Thomas | My Exhibitions | Tags: , , |
Yoga Lab Art display Amsterdam - Flattr button

The flattr button is also still there. I've got a few donations as you can see on the counter below. Thanks all, much appreciated.

The time has been a bit extended on the Yoga-Lab art display. Extended in time: Two weeks remaining now. And extended in scope: Already two months ago I’ve added an additional window.

Which I didn’t show here yet – time to catch up. It is a roughly 1.5 meter deep space with a big window in front. I tried to use the depth – by hanging the artworks in several layers. I used all white frames and bright images, so it works well with the white wall. Turned out nice if I may say so myself.

The other window had some new images the last weeks – following is a photo of it. And I switched them again, so currently it is all landscapes showing there. One big painting I’m working on at the moment might turn up there if I get done in time.

If anyone is interested in using the space in the future (located next to a metro exit at Nieuwmarkt), you can contact the Yoga-Lab.

Geeking out in Amsterdam

Posted on March 27, 2011 by Thomas | My Exhibitions,Oil Paintings | Tags: , , |

Good news: I can extend the art display at Amsterdam’s Nieuwmarkt for two more months. And I’ll have have one more window, so I’m thinking about what to show. I also took some pictures at night – looks very nice with the warm lights from below.

The offline flattr button.

The Yoga-Lab art display - with offline flattr button.

And right now I’m trying some geeky stuff by adding a flattr-QR. Flattr is originally an online tool for micro-donations. You might notice the little buttons below my posts. It’s an awesome idea: you can give quick tips to things you want to support without the hassle of buying useless merchandise or going though complicated donation setups.
Recently they added real world buttons – so I print a physical image with a code and people who like the work can take a picture of it with their mobile phone. Given that they have the right app for it a micro-donation will be transferred to me.

The Yoga-Lab art display at night.

Dramatic Light!

If this works it might not only give me a couple of coins, but I think it could solve a specific problem of such open art displays. Because I do not directly interact with the viewers, I have little feedback about them. Even if anyone takes the effort to remember my website and visits it, I won’t know. Only if they want to buy prints or originals then I would hear about it – but the barrier is very high.
So this could be a new and easier way to interact. Besides, its kinda fun.
The only problem is that I might be too early: Flattr is not very widely known yet – especially not in Holland. The Flattr team should work hard on ending the German domination on their website. Those Germans… I guess my fellow countrymen see the same potential in this idea as I do.

On the forefront of next generation art exhibitions... yeah that's right!

Also for the window I fixed some little damages on “Yola” – a painting from last year, and gave it a protection layer. Since I was at it, I did some enhancements on the shoulders and hair… it’s nice to notice that I learned quite a bit in the last 12 months, not just about painting, but also about how to treat and present an image, and scan it properly.

Ji-Hae 2

Posted on March 11, 2011 by Thomas | Oil Paintings | Tags: , |

I’ve posted two work-in-progress images of it before and here is the final painting of Ji-Hae. It is right now exhibited in the display windows at the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam.

YogaLab Art Display: The public

And as you can see: the public is excited!

I’ve exchanged one image – but I will change back and around coming Friday (another image be removed instead). Beside the original, I am also selling limited original-sized prints for 90 Euro. Contact me if interested – until I’m done putting an ordering system on the web site.

Exhibition Mania

Posted on February 24, 2011 by Thomas | My Exhibitions | Tags: , , |

Yesterday I’ve put several images in display windows in Amsterdam Central (close to Nieuwmarkt). Also, the planned joint exhibitions in Breek van Donk are taking shape and several other options are coming up. Busy, busy.
So always remember: “You never knew you can stretch like you can stretch in the Yogalab!” …not sure if that makes any sense, but I thought I should promote a little. Thanks a lot to Patric of the Yogalab for offering the windows and helping out with everything. A bigger exhibition with opening might be possible there later this year, sounds interesting – I’ll have to see if I will go for it.

Wall right behind the window of the Yogalab-studio.

Looks really nice on the wood panels. This is still a bit Work-in-Progress. I will replace some images with newer ones over the coming weeks. One I am right about finishing. Also a proper poster is missing telling my name.
If you’re in Amsterdam on the Nieuwmarkt, it is right there – half a minute walk into the Koningsstraat. Great spot.

Gallery De Stoker 20 year Exhibition.

There are also more infos about events I talked about recently: – from March 31st until April the 23rd is the open exhibition to celebrate the 20 years of the Gallery Stoker. If any artists wants to take part: You have to supply one image of 20×20 cm. And you have to act fast: 100 of the 120 spots are taken already. Here is the PDF with the information again.

For 3 weekends starting May 14 my water colors will be part of the exhibition in Galerie Berkendijkje in Beek en Donk as part of the Aquarellist Collective. I will be there for sure on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of May – I will have a tent to exhibit more works, and do portraits again. Looking forward to it.
There is a nude-paintings-exhibition planned there later – where I may be part of it too. Better get busy painting!
