This blog of James Gurney is amazing. Not only does he paint the beautiful Dinotopia books – he also explains his processes and insights.
This latest posting – a 3 part series on “Eye Tracking and Composition” is a must read.
Part1, Part2, Part3
It’s apparently from his book “Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn’t Exist“. I’m very curious about this one – bound to be great for any artist surely.
I finished those last week.

This first one is the one I made quickest: 3 hours, yet I think its still the most accurate. I don’t know why my images turn out better the less time I have. Must improve my detailing.

For this one I had much more time (8 hours roughly, in 3 sessions).

I’m also really happy how the next turned out. Great model – that makes a big difference. Also it was done in 2 sessions, yet since the pose and light changed so much, I nearly overpainted everything from the first session. And I think that was a blessing – again the shorter time helped to make the picture much less stiff.
Ok, finally first entry here. I’ll use this blog mainly to post my sketchbook that I carry around with me everywhere.
I’m starting with my sketchbook from last year – I’ll post ca. 10 pics each, until its done. Then i’ll start posting my current sketchbook more on a daily basis.
Maybe I’ll add some of my other pictures – as well links to artists that I discover. How about an occasional emo-rant?
We’ll see how it all goes. Comments, critique and ideas are very welcome.
Here we go – the first pictures here are from a club that I really didn’t enjoy. That made me draw all the more, trying to catch the misery
